If you are one of the millions that are afflicted with Diabetes, you must know how important it is it to effectively manage this disease in order to keep your body as healthy as it possibly can be. The following article will tell you how you can accomplish this life-saving goal.

As Wilford Brimley recommends on the television commercial, you need to "check your sugar, and check it often." Most diabetics need to check their blood sugar levels three times a day, and that is before each meal. If you are having problems regulating your blood sugar levels, your doctor or healthcare professional may prescribe checking it more often in order to keep a closer watch on it.

This is more important than you may think. You need to monitor your blood sugar levels closely so that you can take the necessary measures to lower it if it is too high, or raise it if it is too low. Lowering it may include taking more insulin, and raising it may call for drinking a glass of orange juice. The remedies depends on your doctor's or healthcare professional's specific instruction for you. Follow his/her instructins closely. There are also snack bars and other dietary aids that you can purchase at your local pharmacy. The purpose of these is to safely raise your blood sugar level in a more gradual way.

The second, probably most important thing you need to do is to, of course, follow the dietary guidelines set forth by your doctor or healthcare professional. This will include eating plenty of vegetables an protein, while limiting your intake of carbohydrates and fats. Carbohydrates turn into sugar, while some fats raise your blood sugar level also. The fats found in most fried fast foods can raise a person's blood sugar level too.

Sugars should be completely eleiminated from the diet, and natural sugars, such as the one found in fruit, should be eaten sparingly. Years ago, eliminating sugar meant that diabetics had to give up cookies, pastries, and candies. Nowadays, with new technology, there is a huge variety of sugar free goodies and dessert treats that diabetics can enjoy without worrying about adversely affecting their blood sugar levels. Some products contain the popular artificial sweetener known as Nutrasweet, while others are made completely free of sugar. And they taste good too!

The third thing that diabetics need to do is to exercise regularly. Among other attributes, exercise actually helps to lower a person's blood sugar level, and that is, of course, an important factor for a diabetic's overall health. Regular exercise can include walking, aerobics, or performing an exercise routine. Walking is the best exercise as it works a number of your body's muscles.

The last thing that diabetics need to do: simply take your prescribed medicine. Your doctor or healthcare professional has prescribed this medicine so that it may help you in your quest to control the diabetes which you have. Uncontrolled diabetes will unltimately result in additional health problems such as heart disease, liver and kidney fucntionability, loss of eyesight and more. These problems can be avoided by taking precautionary measures before they occur.
